I received a couple of these cigars in an anonymous cigar bomb (thank you whoever you are!). I’ve never heard of the brand and first thought that these were not worthy of further research. However, out of pure curiousity I loaded Google and searched for Butera. No official website. I only found that this is a boutique cigar made for Michael Butera, often referred to as America’s greatest pipemaker. Hand-made in the Dominican Republic, the Butera Bravo Corto is wrapped in a Connecticut Shade leaf and uses 6 different tobaccos from 3 different countries. As hard as I tried, I could not find valid information on what these 3 countries are, I can only suppose that one of them is Dominican Republic.

With its minimalistic band and a latte-coloured wrapper, this cigar has a pretty good look. Slightly shorter than usual robusto, it feels good in hand. A couple of large veins are visible in the wrapper leaf. The cigar seems to be carefully-rolled with a nicely applied cap.

The two cigars that I had the pleasure of smoking were more than acceptable construction-wise. Correct draw, vast clouds of smoke – all the necessary components are there. I had to remove one star because one of the sticks suddenly went out once.
Flavor : [rating:4/5]
I didn’t really know what to expect from this stick… It had a very faint smell unlit and the pre-draw didn’t tell me much (simply tobacco). I took a match and proceeded to light the Butera. The first puffs immediately indicated that this was going to be a mild smoke. Very smooth, the flavors were creamy and reminded me of hazelnut and perhaps butter. Cheered up by this pleasant start, I went on smoking. Woody flavors were perceptible. Near the middle, the strength suddenly increased although not to the point of being medium. Some delicate pepper appeared and I welcomed it heartily. In the last third, I could also detect some sweetness on the tongue. Overall, I didn’t expect as much evolution from this blend and was pleasantly surprised.

From what I found online, these can be found at $7 per stick. I would qualify this as a medium price/quality ratio – get them if you have a chance, but I wouldn’t specifically chase them.

As you can guess, I liked the flavors in this stick although I also appreciate full-bodied cigars. I don’t know what these 6 tobaccos are, but they are pretty good! I paired the second cigar I had with my morning coffee and was totally satisfied.

I started out smoking these cigars when I went to my 1st cigar lounge. They have been a staple of mine for many years. Although I have found new and more in vogue sticks I still fall back on Butera if I get the chance. Over the last couple years the draw has become hit-or-miss. I have read other places that the filler is primarily Indonesian. I used to punch the cigars but have now gone to a full guillotine cut as the draw like I said can be hit-or-miss. Over all I still fall back on this cigar when I want an easy, nice, buttery and creamy smoke.

This Brand is distributed by Altadis. Among the shop owners that I know that carry it, it is known as the Creamsicle… If you are just starting out or handing a cigar to a first timer, deffinatly a good way to go. Not an everyday cigar for my tastes, but deffinatly a creamy treat once in a while.

Good review. I like mild cigars and Dominican but for $7 a stick, not sure if it’s worth it. I will keep an eye out for a good deal on these.
