I’ve been waiting for such a long time to try one of the famous Opus X Dominican puros. It’s quite tricky to get one here but fortunately I happen to have some nice friends who recently had a trip to the Dominican Republic… and I just had to ask them for a few sticks (Manisha and Robinson – thank you!). So here we go with this review of the Arturo Fuente Opus X Robusto 1992 Rare Estate Reserve. Let me just say that it exceeded my expectations. Read on.
Appearance : [rating:5/5]
First of all, the tin. As you can see it’s beautiful and impressive (so is the band). I hope their designers are well-paid because they definitely deserve a nice salary. The torcedores have made a very good job just as well: the stick is tightly rolled and the wrapper is smooth and oily.
Construction : [rating:5/5]
The construction is high quality as well; the draw was perfect, and the burn regular. This Opus X has the longest ash I’ve ever seen – must be close to 2 inches (!); firm and not flaky at all.
Flavor : [rating:5/5]
The beginning is as powerful as I expected. The first third boasts a very complex bouquet of flavors, composed of precious wood, roasted arabica and, of course, spice. The bouquet is equal (if not superior) to the best Cuban specimens. This first third is very macho, powerful, not blended to be elegant. The smoke is soft and delicious (did I mention that the amounts of produced smoke are more than respectable?). The second third is mostly woody, a little bit less complex that the 1/3 probably to the absence of coffee notes. Half-way through, I feel a mix of woody flavors (which come first), followed by some sugary notes. The taste stays very long on the palate, it’s amazing. In the last third, there is a bit less smoke but the flavors considerably gain in depth and intensity.

This tin is one of the best gifts I’ve ever received. The price tag on these ones is set quite high, all right, but it clearly looks more like a gift item. So, make sure your wife/girlfriend reads this review 🙂

I couldn’t find any downside to this cigar, however hard I tried. Just one thing – make sure you don’t pair it up with alcohol, especially wine – I am confident that the combination won’t be great. A glass of water will do. Happy smoking!

Just landed two tins of robusto’s and one of the Perfecxion X and one of the Reserva D. Found a hot spot that keeps them stocked up so I’m buying a bunch and going to enjoy on these warm Tennessee summer nights. Yes they are pricy but then you only live once.

Good morning BOTL, there is a shop here in TN, called Franklin Cigar that keeps a decent line of Opus X and the Florida Cigar shop in Panama City Beach carries the limited Chateau de la Fuente cigar of three in a tin. Yes they are very hard to come by and I have bought the Anjeo Shark, the Unnamed Reserve and Lost City by the box on line and the Anjeo Shark at my local B&M.

Why bother to review the Opus X line when they are hardly ever available. I live in the metropolitan Philadelphia area and the only time you see them is when a Fuente visits a cigar shop.They’re advertised in the magazines as if they are readily available…it’s a joke.

Such a smooth and flavorful cigar, I brought one with me for vacation and they never disappoint. I paired it with kona coffee since I’m out on the islands, still laid me out on my ass. Don’t let this cigar full you, what made my trip even better the local cigar shop had these tins for $66. I picked up two more tons with out hesitation since in La it cost me more. I also picked up a Opus X shark, however I might let that one age a bit.

Just had one out of the tin of three. Great smoke and very grammy. Stocking up on them. Have all three tin sizes. The robusto is excellent.

Dubai Duty Free seems to stock these regularly in all three sizes from US$ 80 to US$100 for a tin of three. Not cheap, but best cigar I have smoked.

I actually own the extra rare 1992 vintages. Theee come in the tin case. I smoked one and it was amazing to put it mildly. The taste and smoothness is exquisit! I have two left from the set i received. If you ever come across these, DONT THINK ABOUT IT…BUY THEM. They are super hard to find.

I buy these every time I pass through Dubai as massively cheaper than UK. Can last up to 2 hours or more. Ash very long and white, but still lots of smoke. Would choose them over Cohiba every time.

Best cigar I have ever had so far. Review is absolutely on target. I got a box today and I will enjoy for many many nights. What a gift. Wow. Now back to my cigar. It works we’ll with Makets 46.

I beg to differ. Opus X is a very beautiful well constructed cigar, but highly overrated and I find it one dimensional unless it has been aged for at least 3-5 years. I collect cigars and have bought few boxes of Davidoff Dom Perignon vintage 1987 and 1988 but I find Opus X very much overpriced. My daily Cuban R&J Wide Churchill beats any Opus X hand down and I pay $10 a stick in Zurich.

I would describe myself as a novice-intermediate BOTL. I have to admit I was unprepared for the power of Opus X. Inspector you are most correct about the alcohol part. I decided to smoke this with a Bailey’s(I know it’s a more “girly” drink) but let me tell you after the smoke, I was laid out for almost an hour. I have two more of these in my humidor and next time I hope to be more prepared.
Other than this, the smoke was definitely complex and I did find it smooth but boy if your a novice, be prepared for the “spins” if you are unprepared!

I can’t help but disagree with the water/cigar pairing. When I drink water with a cigar it seems to bring out flavors in the same way that a wet dog smells worse than a dry one. Water washes all the “notes” out of your mouth and leave you tasting more cigarette than cigar.

Between this cigar and a Cuban Cohiba paradise is found. The taste and complexity makes this a sheer joy to smoke and anytime I light this up I make sure I am never interrupted,,even if the house is on fire don’t interrupt me.

Nice review.
No alcohol… Try a quaff if Vizcaya VXOP Cask 21 Rum with an Opus X. The alcohol can cleanse the palate and the sweetness in the rum will negate the high nicotine in these cigars.

I’m proud of being Dominican and have them just around the corner… As I allways says, this is one of the best cigars I’d have smoked. I can only compare them with the God of Fire (Carlitos 2006 Double Robusto) from Fuentes Cigars too, and the Opus X Perfection X. They are very expensive cigars but for a special occasion is not a big deal!!

These are best when aged. If you want to pair it with alcohol, Bushmills Green Label is perfect. I recently smoked one at a local cigar bar, their humidor was jacked up and every cigar in it were as hard as rocks. Good thing I brought some of my own.

Of all the cigars that I’ve smoked the Opus X is my favorite. Water in the afternoon and coffee at night is my pairing of this wonderful cigar!

I second Lucky’s suggested pairing of the Opus X with coffee, as the two are a delightful combination. Kenya AA works better than Sumatra, as far as the coffee goes. Mmm, now the ol’ salivary glands are goin’…

I have one that is reasting for a long time that was a gift this last holiday season. it is supposed to be a churchill but it is really buly. Probably close to 8 inches long and with about a 45-50 ring gauge. The small torpedoes i have had were full of strength so I am anticipating something intense from that one.

I had my first Opus this past holiday season. It had a year of rest time in the humidor. It was still a small powerhouse though.

I have had a couple of the Opus x cigars in the last couple years and each one is amazing. Sadly they are quite pricey in my area as well. I have never had a vintage that has rested so well as 1992 though.

I have to agree, it is one of the finest cigars I have tried. I paired it with my usual single malt scotch, the buzz was a little bit too much in the last quarter of the cigar.
