“Everything’s bigger in Texas.” So goes the saying, and it’s certainly what inspired Alec Bradley to name this massive 7 x 70 monster of a cigar the “Texas Lancero.” Why create such a huge cigar to begin with? According to sales representative Phil Kanaby, it’s what buyers were demanding. Let’s see what it’s like to smoke such a massive cigar.

    Appearance : [rating:4/5]
The Indonesian binder leaf is a rich medium brown with a few prominent veins, a bit of tooth, and an oily shine. The band, like the cigar itself, is on the large side, and quite stylish. As you would expect from a lancero, it has a pigtail cap.

    Construction : [rating:3/5]
For the most part, this cigar really impresses when it comes to construction. The draw is effortless but not loose, and it’s perfect from the get go. The burn is incredibly even and quite slow, but it never is in danger of going out. The dark gray ash clings for several inches before dropping off.

So why the 3/5 instead of 5/5? Quite frankly, because the cigar is huge, and it’s too awkward to comfortably smoke. I realize that it was made this way on purpose, but that doesn’t change the fact that it simply is not ideal.

    Flavor : [rating:3.75/5] (3.75)
There are a variety of flavors weaving in and out from beginning to end. The first third is dominated by an earthy undertone and plenty of pepper and leather. The pepper is never overwhelming though, and it slides into the backdrop in the second third. About an inch into the stick, you get a nice splash of citrus and some leather. These shift to the foreground in the middle third, accompanied by toasted nuts and a natural tobacco flavor. Earth and wood notes remain pronounced. In the final third, there is a hint of coffee that comes into play with just a dash of nutmeg. The other flavors are now all in the background. The cigar is medium-bodied (which is good, as it would be overwhelming if it were full-bodied), and the smoke is thick and aromatic.

Why did I take a star off here? Even though I liked the variety of flavors, none of them were particularly unique, and at times the changes seemed pretty random to me. I would have preferred a little more distinctiveness and a progression that made more sense.

    Overall Rating : [rating:3.5/5]
The burn and draw on the Alec Bradley Texas Lancero were excellent, and had the cigar actually been a regular size, I think I would have liked it more than I did. I also would have preferred if the flavors had been a bit more interesting. Still, it was fun to try, and there was still plenty to like about it. Give it a try if you haven’t, but I wouldn’t recommend buying a box.

Who are these people “demanding” these clownishly fat cigars? They must be out there somewhere, I assume they are in the 18-25 demographic.

Nice review. The size of the cigar makes me curious. I’d like to see for myself. Thanks for sharing!
